When you vote in State elections, do you really know where your vote ends up?
When it comes to the large Upper House ballot paper, most people have no idea.
Behind closed doors, political parties and groups negotiate deals to determine where your preferences go. The result is that candidates with a tiny proportion of the vote (less than 1%) can be elected.
This is not transparent, fair or democratic.
Only candidates with genuine levels of community support deserve the right to represent you.
To put an end to this undemocratic system, the Greens have introduced a Bill into State Parliament.
This Bill will stop backroom deals and put all preference decisions back into the hands of voters. It does by this allowing voters to choose to number as many or as few squares as they wish on the ballot paper. If your preferred candidates aren't elected, your vote "exhausts" and can't be harvested to elect candidates you didn't vote for. That's true democracy.
It's your vote.
Sign the petition if you want to put an end to backroom deals that undermine our democracy.
We, the undersigned residents of South Australia, call on the South Australian Parliament to support the Greens Bill to put all preference decisions back into the hands of voters.
