End the $1 Passenger Transport Tax

On May 1st 2017 the South Australian Labor Government introduced a new $1 passenger transport tax that applies to all taxi, chauffered vehicle and ride sharing (eg Uber) rides in metropolitan Adelaide.  The Government claim that they are imposing this new "levy" to cover the cost of their compensation package for the taxi industry for allowing competition from ridesharing enterprises into the market.

That may well be the case, but then, once the compensation has been paid, the "levy" should end. Right?

WRONG!

This "levy" is never-ending. That's why the Greens are calling it a new tax - because that's exactly what it is.

The Greens have introduced a Bill into Parliament to put an end date (a sunset clause) on the scheme. The Government say that it will have recovered all of the costs associated with the taxi industry compensation within 6 years, so the Greens are moving to end the $1 tax 6 years after it commences.

The Labor Government and Liberal Opposition combined forces to oppose the same Greens amendment last year, but the Greens won't give up.

We need your support and the support of your family and friends to show the Government and the Opposition that South Australians don't want or need a new permanent tax on passenger transport. It's unfair and it penalises those who can't or don't drive, and those that choose to leave their car at home.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION BELOW AND SHARE IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO JOIN THE CAMPAIGN TO END THE UNFAIR TAX ON PASSENGER TRANSPORT.

We the undersigned residents of South Australia, call on the South Australian Labor Government to end the $1 passenger transport levy once the compensation to the taxi industry has been paid.  Any continuation of this levy beyond this point is another tax. Slugging people who don’t or can't drive, or penalising those who choose not to drive themselves is unfair. Do the decent thing and put an end date on this tax.
